Your crypto history has to survive the move
Moving tax residency does not reset your crypto position. The country you leave can still assess gains that arose while you were resident, and the country you arrive in will want to know what you brought and when you acquired it. Gaps in cost basis, closed exchanges and lost records are all easier to reconstruct while you are still resident and still have local access.
Who this affects
Anyone with a position built over several years across multiple venues. The longer the history, the more likely part of it lives on an exchange that no longer exists or in a wallet whose provenance is undocumented.
Why it matters
Because the reporting environment tightened while the records did not. Exchange reporting and cross-border information exchange have expanded considerably, so a position that was effectively private a few years ago is now substantially visible. What has not improved is anyone's personal archive — and the burden of showing what a coin cost sits with the holder, not the authority.
What they actually look at
- Cost basis and acquisition dates for each position
- Exchange statements, including from venues that have since closed
- Which wallets you controlled, and when, and how that is evidenced
- Whether a disposal happened before or after residency ended
How it is resolved
- Exporting everything now, while accounts are open and local verification still works
- Reconstructing cost basis where it is missing, before the trail gets colder
- Separating pre-move holdings from post-move activity so the two never have to be untangled later
- Deciding deliberately which side of the residency-end date a disposal should fall on
The common mistake
Believing the move itself cleans the history. It does the opposite: it adds a second jurisdiction that will ask the same questions, and removes the local access that made answering them easy.
When the door closes
Records get harder to obtain the longer you wait and the further you go. This is the one item that is strictly easier before departure.
